IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit Company)
The Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) was one of New York City's primary subway operators in the early 20th century, established to provide rapid transit service across Manhattan and parts of the Bronx. It was founded in 1902 to address urban congestion and connect neighborhoods more efficiently. The IRT built and operated subway lines that helped shape the city’s growth, setting standards for urban transit. In 1940, the city took over the IRT, integrating it into the larger subway system that continues to serve millions of residents and visitors today.
