Iron Overload Disorders
Iron overload disorders occur when the body accumulates too much iron, which can damage organs like the liver, heart, and pancreas. Normally, the body regulates iron levels through absorption in the digestive system, but in these conditions, regulation fails. The most common type is hereditary hemochromatosis, caused by genetic mutations. Excess iron can cause fatigue, joint pain, and more serious issues if untreated. Treatment often involves regular blood removal (phlebotomy) to reduce iron levels and prevent organ damage. Early detection and management are important to avoid complications.
