Ippen Shonin
Ippen Shonin was a Japanese monk of the Kamakura period, best known for founding the Ji Sect of Pure Land Buddhism. His teachings emphasized the compassion of Amida Buddha, focusing on the practice of reciting the nembutsu, which is the phrase "Namu Amida Butsu" (I take refuge in Amida Buddha). Ippen advocated for accessibility in spiritual practice, encouraging everyone, regardless of their background, to engage with Buddhism. He is also noted for his itinerant lifestyle, traveling widely to spread his teachings and promote devotion to Amida through simple, heartfelt prayer. His influence shaped Japanese devotional practices significantly.
