IOP (Intraocular Pressure)

Intraocular pressure (IOP) refers to the fluid pressure inside the eye. The eye contains a clear fluid called aqueous humor, which nourishes tissues and maintains its shape. This fluid is produced and drained at a balanced rate; if this balance is disrupted, pressure can increase. Elevated IOP may damage the optic nerve, potentially leading to glaucoma and vision loss, while too low IOP can cause other problems. Regular eye exams measure IOP to help detect and manage eye health, especially to prevent damage caused by abnormal pressure levels.
