ion engine
An ion engine is a type of spacecraft propulsion that uses electrically charged particles, called ions, to generate thrust. It works by removing electrons from a propellant, such as xenon gas, creating positively charged ions. These ions are accelerated through electric fields to extremely high speeds and then expelled out of the engine, producing a gentle but continuous push. Although the thrust is very small compared to traditional engines, ion engines are highly efficient and can operate for long periods, making them ideal for deep space missions where fuel economy and efficiency are critical.
