Ion drive

An ion drive is a type of propulsion system that uses electric energy to form and accelerate ions—charged particles—to generate thrust. Unlike traditional engines that burn fuel for thrust, ion drives use electricity (often from solar panels) to ionize a propellant like xenon gas, then accelerate these ions through electric fields to produce a gentle but continuous push. This method is highly efficient, allowing spacecraft to achieve higher speeds over long periods with much less fuel, making it ideal for deep-space missions. While it provides low thrust compared to chemical engines, its efficiency enables sustained acceleration and extended mission durations.
