iodine deficiency disorders (IDD)

Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) are health problems caused when the body doesn’t get enough iodine, an essential mineral needed for hormone production in the thyroid gland. Without enough iodine, the thyroid can't make enough hormones, leading to issues like goiter (enlarged thyroid), mental impairments, stunted growth, and developmental delays, especially in children. Iodine deficiency can also cause fatigue and weight gain in adults. It’s common in areas where iodine-rich foods like seafood are scarce and where soil or water lacks iodine. Addressing IDD typically involves adding iodine to salt or other foods to ensure adequate intake.
