intraoperative recall

Intraoperative recall occurs when a patient unintentionally becomes conscious during surgery while under anesthesia, potentially remembering some or all of the procedure afterward. It’s rare but can be distressing, causing anxiety or discomfort. During general anesthesia, medications are used to prevent awareness, but in some cases, these may not fully suppress consciousness. Anesthesia teams monitor vital signs and anesthesia levels closely to minimize this risk. If intraoperative recall does happen, healthcare providers can offer support and counseling, as well as assess for any possible psychological effects. Overall, anesthesia is designed to keep patients unconscious and pain-free throughout surgery.
