intra-sexual selection
Intra-sexual selection is a form of natural selection where members of the same sex compete to attract mates or secure reproductive opportunities. For example, males might compete through physical battles, displays, or performances to win over females or to establish dominance. Traits that give individuals an advantage in these competitions—such as strength, size, or impressive displays—become more common over generations. This process helps explain why certain traits, like large antlers in deer or elaborate plumage in birds, evolve as males strive to outcompete each other for reproductive success.
