Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) Intervention
An Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) is a medical device used to support the heart’s function in critically ill patients, especially those with severe heart failure or during certain heart surgeries. It consists of a balloon placed in the aorta, the main artery carrying blood from the heart. The balloon inflates and deflates in sync with the heartbeat: inflating during relaxation to increase blood flow and deflating just before the heart beats to reduce its workload. This process improves oxygen delivery to the heart and vital organs, helping stabilize the patient while they recover or prepare for further treatment.
