Intestinal Failure

Intestinal failure occurs when the intestines cannot absorb enough nutrients and fluids from food to meet the body's needs. This can result from conditions like severe Crohn’s disease, surgical removal of large parts of the intestine, or other diseases damaging gut function. Without proper absorption, individuals may experience weight loss, dehydration, and malnutrition. Treatment often involves specialized nutrition support, such as total parenteral nutrition (TPN), which delivers nutrients directly into the bloodstream. Managing intestinal failure aims to maintain nutritional health while addressing the underlying condition and, when possible, restoring intestinal function.
