Intersectionality in Disability
Intersectionality in disability refers to understanding how different aspects of a person's identity—such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, and disability—interconnect and influence their experiences. It recognizes that the challenges and barriers someone faces are shaped not just by their disability, but also by other social factors, leading to unique and complex situations. For example, a person who is disabled and also belongs to an underserved racial group may encounter distinct obstacles compared to someone with only one of those identities. Addressing intersectionality helps create more inclusive and effective support systems that consider these overlapping experiences.
