Interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME)
An Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection (ICME) is a large burst of solar wind and magnetic fields that is ejected from the Sun’s corona into space. When the Sun releases a massive cloud of charged particles and magnetic energy, it travels through the solar system at high speeds. If an ICME reaches Earth, it can disturb our planet's magnetic field, potentially causing phenomena like beautiful auroras, satellite malfunctions, or power grid disruptions. Essentially, ICMEs are large-scale solar storms that travel through space, affecting Earth's space environment and sometimes our technological systems.
