interneurons
Interneurons are specialized nerve cells located within the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) that act as connectors and processors between sensory inputs and motor outputs. They analyze and interpret information received from sensory neurons and then relay appropriate signals to motor neurons, which control muscles and responses. Interneurons are essential for complex functions like reflexes, thinking, and learning, enabling us to process information quickly and coordinate bodily actions efficiently. In essence, they serve as the communication hubs that help the nervous system make sense of incoming data and produce appropriate responses.
