International Tsunami Warning System
The International Tsunami Warning System (ITWS) is a global network that detects potential tsunamis, usually caused by underwater earthquakes, and alerts countries at risk. It uses seismographs and ocean buoys to monitor ocean activity, quickly assessing if a tsunami might occur. When a threat is identified, warnings are issued to coastal communities to help them evacuate and prepare, reducing loss of life and property. The system promotes international cooperation, sharing data and coordination efforts to ensure timely, accurate alerts for vulnerable regions worldwide.
