International Sediment Initiative (ISI)
The International Sediment Initiative (ISI) is a global effort coordinated by UNESCO and other organizations to better understand and manage sediment in rivers and lakes. Sediment consists of particles like sand, silt, and clay carried by water. While sediment is natural, excessive or poorly managed sediment can harm aquatic ecosystems, cause sedimentation in reservoirs, and reduce water quality. ISI promotes research, monitoring, and policy development to address sediment-related issues, aiming to protect freshwater resources and ensure sustainable management of aquatic environments worldwide.
