International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW)
The International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW), established in 1946, is an international agreement aiming to ensure the sustainable management of whale populations. It regulates whaling activities by setting guidelines and limits, encouraging conservation efforts, and promoting scientific research. The ICRW also established the International Whaling Commission (IWC), which oversees these rules and monitors whale populations worldwide. Its goal is to prevent the overhunting of whales, protect their habitats, and ensure that whale populations remain healthy for future generations while allowing some regulated commercial and indigenous whaling.
