International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention)
The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, commonly known as the BWM Convention, is an agreement aimed at preventing the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens through ships’ ballast water. When ships take on water to stabilize themselves, they may also carry invasive species. The convention requires ships to manage their ballast water and sediments, ensuring that they treat or exchange this water to minimize ecological risks. Established by the International Maritime Organization, it promotes environmental protection and sustainable shipping practices worldwide.
