Instant runoff election
An instant runoff election is a voting method used to select a winner in a situation where multiple candidates are running for office. Voters rank candidates in order of preference. If no candidate receives a majority of first-choice votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. Votes for that candidate are redistributed to the remaining candidates based on the voters' next preferences. This process continues until one candidate achieves a majority. This system ensures that the elected candidate has broader support, reducing the chances of winners being selected with less than 50% of the votes.
