Inspectors General (IGs) are independent officials in government agencies responsible for promoting efficiency, integrity, and accountability. They conduct audits, investigations, and evaluations to ensure that federal programs operate effectively and comply with laws and regulations. IGs help identify waste, fraud, and abuse, and they report their findings to Congress and agency leaders. Their work aims to improve the efficiency of government operations and safeguard public resources, ensuring taxpayers' money is used appropriately. Each IG reports specifically to the agency they oversee but also has the authority to present findings to higher levels of government.
