insect metamorphosis
Insect metamorphosis is the biological process through which insects undergo significant physical changes as they develop. There are two main types: complete and incomplete. Complete metamorphosis involves four stages—egg, larva (caterpillar or grub), pupa (chrysalis or cocoon), and adult—where the insect radically changes form, often specializing in different roles. Incomplete metamorphosis has three stages—egg, nymph, and adult—where the developing insect resembles a smaller version of the mature insect and gradually transforms through molts. These processes allow insects to adapt to different environments and reduce competition between young and adult stages.
