Þing

A Þing (pronounced "thing") was an assembly or governing body in ancient Norse and Germanic societies. It served as a forum for discussions, decision-making, and resolving disputes among free men. Participants would gather to make laws, settle conflicts, and address community issues. The Þing represented one of the earliest forms of democracy, where decisions were made collectively. Important legal matters, including disputes over land and resources, were often settled here. The concept influenced later political systems in Scandinavia and beyond, contributing to the development of parliaments and representative governance.
