inert gas narcosis

Inert gas narcosis is a temporary, reversible impairment of mental and physical abilities that occurs when divers breathe certain inert gases, like nitrogen, at high pressures underwater. Under these conditions, the gases act like anesthesia, affecting the brain similarly to alcohol intoxication—causing impaired judgment, coordination, and decision-making. It typically happens at depths beyond 30 meters (around 100 feet). Divers reduce its effects by ascending to shallower depths or using different gases, such as helium, which is less narcotic, to stay safe during deep dives.
