Industrial chlorine production
Industrial chlorine production primarily uses the electrolysis of saltwater (brine). In this process, salt (sodium chloride) dissolved in water is subjected to an electric current, causing it to split into its components: chlorine gas, sodium hydroxide, and hydrogen. Chlorine gas is collected and purified for use in disinfectants, plastics, and other products. This method is efficient, scalable, and relies on abundant salt, making it the main way industries produce chlorine safely and economically.
