Individual Medley

An Individual Medley (IM) is a swimming race where a single swimmer competes in all four main strokes—butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle—one after the other in a specific order. The swimmer performs a set distance of each stroke, demonstrating versatility and skill across different techniques. The race tests overall swimming ability, endurance, and transition efficiency between strokes. For example, a 200-yard IM consists of 50 yards of each stroke. The swimmer's time is the total for all four segments, with the goal being to complete the entire sequence as quickly as possible.
