Indian Preference Act

The Indian Preference Act, also known as the Indian Purchases Act (Act No. 18 of 1874), was enacted by the British colonial government in India. It aimed to prioritize the employment and purchase of goods from Indian manufacturers and suppliers over foreign ones. The law was designed to promote Indian industries and ensure that government contracts and employment opportunities favored Indian nationals, thereby supporting economic growth and self-sufficiency in India. It recognized the importance of fostering indigenous businesses while regulating how government dealings with private suppliers were conducted.
