Indian Land Consolidation Act

The Indian Land Consolidation Act is a U.S. law aimed at reducing fractional land holdings owned by individual Native Americans. Over time, Native land gets divided into many small, scattered plots among heirs, making management difficult and limiting economic development. This act provides tools for tribes and individual landowners to exchange, consolidate, or transfer these small parcels, helping to create larger, more usable tracts of land. Its goal is to promote efficient land use, improve economic opportunities, and support the self-sufficiency of Native communities.
