Independent variables are factors or elements that researchers believe might influence or affect other variables in an experiment or study. They are deliberately changed or varied by the researcher to observe how they impact the outcome, known as the dependent variable. For example, in testing how sunlight affects plant growth, the amount of sunlight is an independent variable. Essentially, independent variables are the proposed causes or inputs that help determine whether and how they influence the results being measured.
