Independent Police Review Authority

The Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA) was a city agency tasked with overseeing and investigating complaints against the police to ensure accountability and transparency. Its role was to examine allegations of misconduct, often involving use of force or inappropriate behavior, independently of the police department. IPRA aimed to provide public trust by conducting impartial investigations and recommending disciplinary actions when necessary. Note: as of 2015, IPRA was replaced by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) in Chicago, which continues similar oversight responsibilities.
