Independent Mental Capacity Advocates

Independent Mental Capacity Advocates (IMCAs) are trained professionals who support and represent individuals who may lack the ability to make specific decisions about their welfare or treatment. When someone is at risk of having choices made for them, and there are concerns about their understanding or ability, an IMCA is appointed to ensure their views are heard and their rights protected. They act independently from healthcare providers and family, advocating solely for the person’s best interests, ensuring decisions are fair, respectful, and align with the individual’s preferences.
