Independent Counsel Act
The Independent Counsel Act was a law enacted in the United States to create a special office, independent of the Department of Justice, to investigate and prosecute cases involving high-level government officials, especially in situations where there might be a conflict of interest. It aimed to ensure unbiased investigations into allegations of misconduct by government officials. However, the law was repealed in 1999 because of concerns about its effectiveness and cost. Since then, prosecutions involving high-level officials are handled directly by the Department of Justice or special prosecutors appointed for specific cases.
