in-group

An in-group is a social group to which an individual feels a sense of belonging, loyalty, and identity. People often share common interests, attributes, or goals with their in-group, which fosters trust and camaraderie. This sense of connection can influence attitudes and behaviors, often leading individuals to favor members of their in-group over those outside it—a phenomenon known as in-group bias. In-group membership can be based on various factors such as nationality, ethnicity, profession, or shared hobbies. Recognizing in-groups helps us understand social dynamics and the factors that contribute to group cohesion and insider-outsider distinctions.
