Illinois history
Illinois's history is shaped by indigenous peoples like the Illini and Potawatomi, European exploration, and later, French and British control. It became a U.S. territory in 1800 and a state in 1818. The state grew rapidly with agriculture, especially corn and soybeans, and became a transportation hub with Chicago’s rise in the 19th century. Illinois played a key role in the Civil War and industrialization. It’s known for political leaders like Abraham Lincoln, who began his career there. Today, Illinois balances urban innovation in Chicago with rich agricultural traditions across the state.
