Illiberalism

Illiberalism refers to a political approach where governments or leaders prioritize authority and control over individual freedoms and democratic principles. This often involves weakening checks on power, limiting freedom of speech, restricting media independence, and undermining judicial independence. Unlike liberal democracies that emphasize protecting individual rights and promoting pluralism, illiberal regimes may justify these actions as necessary for stability or national culture, even if they reduce political competition and civil liberties. Essentially, illiberalism challenges the core ideas of open, participatory democracy, favoring centralized control and limited political pluralism.
