IL-5 inhibitors
IL-5 inhibitors are medications that target a specific protein called interleukin-5 (IL-5) involved in the activity of certain immune cells called eosinophils. These cells can cause inflammation in conditions like severe asthma and eosinophilic esophagitis. By blocking IL-5, these drugs reduce eosinophil levels, decreasing inflammation and improving symptoms. They are typically used in patients with eosinophilic-driven diseases who do not respond well to standard treatments. Examples include mepolizumab and reslizumab. Overall, IL-5 inhibitors help control inflammation related to eosinophils, leading to better disease management.
