IGM (Intersex Genital Mutilation)

Intersex Genital Mutilation (IGM) refers to harmful, non-consensual medical procedures performed on intersex children to alter their genitalia to conform with typical male or female standards. These surgeries often occur without the child's consent and can include removal, reconstruction, or modification of sensitive tissues. IGM aims to make intersex bodies appear more typical, but it can cause physical pain, loss of natural functions, and psychological trauma. International human rights groups advocate against unnecessary early surgeries, emphasizing the importance of respecting intersex individuals’ autonomy and allowing them to decide about their bodies when they are capable.
