IDP (Internally Displaced Person)

An internally displaced person (IDP) is someone who has been forced to leave their home due to conflict, violence, natural disasters, or other crises but has not crossed an international border. Unlike refugees, IDPs remain within their country’s borders, which can make it more challenging to access aid and protection. They often live in temporary shelters or informal settlements and face ongoing risks and hardships while waiting for safety, stability, or permanent solutions. IDPs are recognized as vulnerable and in need of support, but their situation can be overlooked because they are still within their own country's jurisdiction.
