ICS (Inhaled Corticosteroids)

Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are medications used to reduce inflammation in the airways, primarily for asthma and certain chronic lung conditions. When inhaled, they directly target the lungs, helping to prevent and control symptoms like wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. ICS work by decreasing swelling and mucus production in the bronchial tubes, making breathing easier. They are typically used regularly for long-term management rather than immediate relief. Though generally safe, they may have side effects such as throat irritation or oral thrush, which can often be minimized by proper inhaler technique and rinsing the mouth after use.
