Icelandic Government
Iceland’s government is a parliamentary democracy, meaning elected representatives govern on behalf of the people. The Alþingi, Iceland’s parliament, is one of the world’s oldest, responsible for making laws and overseeing the government. The President, largely a ceremonial figure, is elected by the people. The executive power lies with the Prime Minister and the cabinet, appointed from the majority party or coalition in Parliament. Iceland emphasizes democratic processes, rule of law, and separation of powers, ensuring government accountability and protecting citizens’ rights within a constitutional framework.
