Icelandic Constitutional Assembly
The Icelandic Constitutional Assembly was established to create a new constitution for Iceland following the 2008 financial crisis and widespread public demand for political reform. Formed in 2010, the assembly consisted of elected representatives from various backgrounds, who debated and proposed changes to the country’s governing principles. The process was notable for its democratic engagement, using social media and public consultations to involve citizens. Although the proposed constitution was not adopted by the Parliament, it significantly influenced debates on governance and democratic practices in Iceland and highlighted the importance of direct public participation in political processes.
