ICAM-1 (Intercellular Adhesion Molecule 1)
ICAM-1, or Intercellular Adhesion Molecule 1, is a protein found on the surface of many cell types, especially cells lining blood vessels. It plays a key role in immune responses by helping immune cells, like lymphocytes, stick to and move through blood vessel walls to reach sites of infection or inflammation. This adhesion process enables immune cells to effectively patrol the body and respond to threats. Additionally, ICAM-1 can be involved in the development of some diseases, such as inflammation and autoimmune conditions, by facilitating inappropriate immune cell attachment and activity.
