Hypochlorite
Hypochlorite is a chemical compound commonly used as a disinfectant and bleaching agent. It is most familiar as sodium hypochlorite, which is the active ingredient in household bleach. When added to water, hypochlorite releases chlorine, effectively killing bacteria, viruses, and fungi, making it useful for sanitizing surfaces, water treatment, and cleaning. It also helps remove stains and whiten fabrics. While effective, hypochlorite must be handled carefully, as it can cause skin and eye irritation and should be stored away from acids and other chemicals to prevent hazardous reactions.
