Hydrogen sulfide
Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a colorless, toxic gas known for its distinctive rotten egg smell. It naturally occurs in volcanic emissions, swamps, and decaying organic matter, and is also produced during the breakdown of sulfur-containing compounds. While it has some industrial uses, exposure to high concentrations can be harmful, causing respiratory issues and other health problems. Because of its toxicity and strong odor, hydrogen sulfide is monitored carefully in workplaces and natural settings to ensure safety. Small amounts are sometimes used in scientific and medical applications, but in larger amounts, it poses significant health and environmental risks.
