Hydrofoils are specialized structures attached to boats or submarines that lift the vessel above the water's surface as it gains speed. They work like airplane wings underwater; when water flows over the foil, it creates lift, reducing the boat’s contact with the water. This decreases drag, allowing the vessel to move faster, with less resistance and a smoother ride. Hydrofoils are used to improve speed and fuel efficiency in ships, racing boats, and some passenger ferries, enabling them to glide above the water rather than plow through it.
