Hutu militias
Hutu militias are armed groups composed mainly of members from the Hutu ethnic group in Rwanda. During the Rwandan Genocide in 1994, these militias played a significant role in the mass violence against the Tutsi minority and moderate Hutus, fueled by longstanding ethnic tensions. They operated outside official military structures, often carrying out violent acts with the aim of consolidating Hutu power. Their actions contributed to a tragic period of genocide, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people over a few months. After the genocide, these militias were disbanded or integrated into the national military and police forces.
