Hunger Hormones
Hunger hormones are chemicals in your body that regulate appetite and energy balance. The main ones are ghrelin, which signals hunger and stimulates eating, increasing before meals; and leptin, which signals fullness and helps you feel satisfied after eating. Insulin, released after eating, also influences hunger by helping cells absorb glucose. These hormones communicate with your brain, mainly the hypothalamus, to control when you feel hungry or full. Their balance is essential for maintaining a healthy weight and energy levels. Disruptions can lead to overeating, under-eating, or weight management challenges.
