Hungarian history
Hungary's history is marked by its strategic central European location, alternating between independence and domination by larger powers. It was part of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, a significant Central European empire, until Ottoman invasions in the 16th century. After periods of Habsburg rule and participation in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867-1918), Hungary faced upheaval following World War I, losing territory and sovereignty. It endured communist rule after World War II until 1989, when democracy was restored. Today, Hungary is a member of the European Union, balancing a rich cultural heritage with modern political and economic developments.
