Hugo de Vries (botanist)
Hugo de Vries was a Dutch botanist and geneticist born in 1848, known for pioneering work in genetics and plant breeding. He studied how traits pass from one generation of plants to another and was among the first to support the idea of genes as units of inheritance. De Vries also rediscovered and expanded upon Gregor Mendel's work on heredity, helping to establish the foundation of modern genetics. His research on inheritance and mutation contributed significantly to understanding how new plant varieties arise, influencing both science and agriculture.
