Hugh Lane

Hugh Lane was an Irish art dealer and collector born in 1865, best known for amassing a significant collection of European paintings. He played a key role in promoting Irish art and founded the Dublin City Gallery, now called the Hugh Lane Gallery. Lane’s most notable achievement was acquiring and displaying important works by renowned artists like Picasso and Monet. His efforts helped make Dublin a notable center for modern art. Unfortunately, his collection and legacy were marked by controversy over ownership rights, especially related to a famous painting called “Luncheon of the Boating Party” by Renoir.
