Hugh Despenser was an influential English nobleman and royal favorite during King Edward II’s reign in the early 14th century. Despenser’s influence and perceived greed made him a controversial figure, ultimately contributing to conflicts that resulted in his downfall. He was executed in 1326 after being accused of treason during the turbulent period surrounding Edward II’s downfall.
